Rep. Noah Calls for Swift Resolution in Sinoe-Grand Gedeh Boundaries Dispute

MONROVIA, LIBERIA: Sinoe County District #3 Representative, Alex Noah, has stressed the need for relevant authorities to intervene and swiftly address the land boundary disputes between communities in Sinoe and Grand Gedeh counties.

The lawmaker warned that the unresolved land conflict is a "slow-burning crisis" that poses serious threat to stability in the region and the country at large.

The dispute involves residents of Pyne Town in Sinoe County and Gorbowrogba in Grand Gedeh County, who are scrambling over demarcation. Tensions are said to be creeping in the region in months.

In addition to his concern, Representative Alex Noah, on Tuesday, February 17, urged the House of Representatives to summon the Minister of Local Government, Francis Nyumali, and the Chairman of the Liberia Land Authority, Samuel F. Kpakio, to explain why land disputes seem to be gradually slipping out of control.

“This is no longer a local issue; it is a national security concern,” lawmakers quoted in the debate warned. “If we allow these disputes to fester, we are inviting violence and instability,” he cautioned.

Lawmakers told Plenary that residents are growing frustrated over the absence of a clear, legally recognized boundary in specific regions between the two counties. “People are fighting because the government has failed to show them where their land truly lies,” a legislator said during the session.

Following open debates, the House has ordered the heads of relevant institutions to appear before Plenary to determine a lasting solution to the matter. Lawmakers called for a legal explanation and a geographical map showing the true boundary line between the two counties.

Plenary also ordered the creation of an Ad hoc Committee to investigate the dispute and report back within a specified timeframe. It signals the House's move to treat land conflicts as an utmost priority.
