Senator Kogar Calls for LNP Inspector General’s Suspension Amid Ongoing Drug Investigation

MONROVIA, LIBERIA — Senator Samuel G. Kogar has called on President Joseph Nyuma Boakai to suspend the Inspector General of the Liberia National Police (LNP) while an ongoing investigation into Liberia’s drug situation continues, warning that the continued involvement of a security agency’s leadership could undermine public confidence in the process.

Senator Kogar made the call in a statement welcoming recent appointments at the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA), saying the changes demonstrate President Boakai’s commitment to strengthening Liberia’s security sector and intensifying the fight against illicit drugs.

Kogar, who has previously raised concerns about the matter on the floor of the Liberian Senate, said the President should take additional steps to protect the credibility and integrity of the ongoing investigation. “I will further recommend that the President take additional measures to protect the integrity and credibility of the ongoing investigations,” he said.

The Nimba County Senator specifically recommended the suspension of the LNP Inspector General for the duration of the investigation. Alternatively, he wants the police chief to recuse himself from any involvement in the probe.

According to Kogar, the recommendation is necessary to prevent any possible conflict of interest and to ensure that the investigation is conducted without interference or questions about its independence. “Where the leadership of a security agency may become connected to or implicated in an ongoing investigation, appropriate steps should be taken,” he stated.

The Senator argued that maintaining impartiality and transparency is critical, particularly in investigations involving national security institutions and the country’s fight against illicit drugs. He said the public must be assured that the process is being handled fairly and independently.

Kogar also welcomed the newly appointed officials at the LDEA, assuring them of his support as they assume responsibility for confronting Liberia’s growing drug challenge. He said their professional training, experience and years of service could be critical to restoring confidence in the agency.

“I assure the newly appointed officials of my fullest support,” Kogar said, adding that their experience will be important in helping the LDEA effectively carry out its mandate and strengthen the public’s trust in the institution.

The Senator reaffirmed his commitment to accountability, transparency and the rule of law, saying Liberia’s fight against illicit drugs must be matched by strong institutional oversight. “I reaffirm my unwavering commitment to the people of Liberia and to strengthening democratic governance through accountability, transparency, and adherence to the rule of law,” Kogar declared.
