Former CDC Supporter Lashes Weah's 2029 Presidential Bid

Monrovia, Liberia: Former Liberian President George Weah's declaration to recontest Liberia's presidency is generating mixed reactions from cross-section of citizens including supporters and non-supporters of his Congress for Democratic Change (CDC).

The ex-Liberian leader made his intent known recently when he attended the CDC-USA chapter 2026 National Convection in the United States. Weah attributed his decision to what he called a poor handling of the state under the Boakai-led Unity Party government.

He accused the current administration of police brutality against dissents, undermining the law rule of law and reversing gains made during the CDC's regime; which according to him, has promoted his desire to seek a return to the presidency and accelerate national development.

But, the recent declaration by the Ex-Liberian president has met strong criticism from a former die-hard supporter of the Congress for Democratic Change, George Dankwan, who expresses doubt about any possible return of Weah to power.

Dankwan accused the Weah's CDC-administration of betraying the hopes of the Liberian people then in state power. He believes the immediate past government failed in areas of job employment, security, education and healthcare among others.

The former CDC supporter alleged that the security of the state was fragile under the watch of Weah. Dankwan argued that insecurity was alarming, stating that multiple reports suggested robbery attacks during day and night hours in the country.

He claimed that the current Unity Party administration led by President Joseph Boakai has improved security operations, and enhanced free movement of citizens anytime of the day.

"Today our mothers are able to sell in the market up to 10: 0 lock you know why, because they are not being intimidated by the Sabu Units," he said.

According to George Dankwan, coupled with other national development initiatives including roads construction and electricity expansion, the UP government proved more reliable than what was seen under the CDC.

Dankwan believes these are concrete reasons citizens may not opt to reelect former President George Weah to the presidency in the upcoming 2029 polls or beyond.

‎Weah's 2029 Presidential Bid has become a serious debate in the country. He was unseated in the 2023 polls by political rival and current President, Joseph Boakai.

While others view George Weah's comeback to be slim, some believe he still holds a strong base as the political climate in Liberia continues to shift allies ahead of the next Presidential and Legislative elections.
