Liberia Needs Up to US$10 Million for AFCON 2027 Qualification, Says Lone Star Committee

Monrovia, Liberia: Liberia’s national football team will require between US$5 million and US$10 million to effectively pursue qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), according to the Chairman of the Lone Star National Team Mobilization Committee, Luther Tarpeh.

Addressing members of the House of Representatives during Thursday’s regular session, Tarpeh appealed for greater legislative support for the national team, emphasizing that adequate financial backing is essential for Liberia’s chances of returning to Africa’s biggest football tournament.

Tarpeh disclosed that the Lone Star is currently facing significant financial difficulties, including outstanding hotel debts in four countries where the team has stayed during international assignments.

According to him, the funding challenges have negatively affected player welfare and overall team operations, forcing players and officials to endure less-than-ideal accommodations while representing Liberia abroad.

Liberia’s national football team currently owes hotel bills in four countries. The players are suffering and, in many cases, are forced to stay in low-budget hotels across Africa,” Tarpeh told lawmakers.

He stressed that increased investment in the national team would help address key logistical problems, improve living and travel conditions for players, and provide the resources needed to compete effectively during the AFCON qualification campaign.

The Mobilization Committee chairman noted that a stronger financial commitment from the government and stakeholders would significantly enhance Liberia’s chances of ending its prolonged absence from the Africa Cup of Nations and restoring confidence in the country’s football program.

Tarpeh’s appeal comes as Liberia prepares for the road to the 2027 AFCON tournament, with football authorities seeking additional support to strengthen the national team’s competitiveness on the continental stage.
