LRA Orders Investigation Into Allegations Of Bribery And Extortion Involving Staff

The Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA) has launched an investigation into allegations of bribery and extortion involving three of its employees, including two Assistant Commissioners.

The allegations were raised during a live radio broadcast on October 28, 2026, and subsequently circulated on social media.

According to the LRA, the allegations stem from claims made by an individual identified as a Nigerian businessman, who accused the three employees of obtaining money from him under the pretext of facilitating the award of a contract to develop software for the Authority.

The LRA says it recognizes the seriousness of the allegations and the public concerns they have generated, reaffirming its commitment to maintaining integrity, professionalism and accountability in the administration of Liberia's revenue laws.

In response to the allegations, Commissioner General James Dorbor Jallah has directed the Authority's Professional Ethics Division to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation.

The LRA says the investigation is already underway, with measures in place to preserve evidence, prevent interference and ensure fairness throughout the process.

The Authority emphasizes that the allegations remain unproven and that all employees involved are entitled to due process and fair treatment.

It adds that any necessary interim administrative measures will be considered in accordance with its Human Resource Policy, ethical guidelines and established procedures.

Speaking on the matter, Commissioner General James Dorbor Jallah says the Authority will not shield anyone found to have violated its rules.

“The LRA belongs to the Liberian people, and public trust is the foundation of everything we do. These allegations are serious, and they will be investigated fully, fairly and without fear or favor. No one is above the rules of this Authority. Where wrongdoing is established, appropriate action will follow, and where staff are cleared, that too will be made known,” Jallah said.

The LRA further assures the public that appropriate administrative or disciplinary action will be taken if misconduct is established, consistent with its Human Resource Policy, ethical guidelines and core values.

The Authority says where necessary, the matter will be referred to relevant national authorities in accordance with applicable laws.

Meanwhile, the LRA is encouraging individuals with credible information about the allegations to report through its whistleblowing platform available on the Authority's official website.

It says information submitted through the platform will be handled in accordance with applicable confidentiality procedures.
