Montserrado vs. Bong Final Group Stage Match Suspended After Fans Disruptions
The final group stage match between Montserrado and Bong counties in the ongoing National County Sports Meet on Saturday, December 20th, was suspended following a violent disruption by fans at the Bopolu's Sports Pitch in Gbarpolu County.
K-News Sports gathered that Montserrado County had taken a 2-1 when angry fans began throwing stones onto the pitch, forcing match officials to halt the play before eventually suspending the match.
Montserrado and Bong counties entered the decider their battle with 1 point each in the three-team Group D. A draw above 2-2 could have favored the qualification of both teams to the quarterfinals.
Reports reaching our sports desk indicate that some spectators believed to be supporters of group hosts Gbarpolu County grew dissatisfied with the pace of the match between Montserrado and Bong counties.
Tensions flared when Montserrado County restored their lead 2-1 over Bong County, which saw spectators throwing bottles and other objects on the pitch.
In the match, Montserrado County opened the scoring before Bong County’s Kpatawee Boys equalized. Montserrado later regained the lead to make it 2-1.
Sports analysts say the trend of the score posed a serious threat to Gbarpolu County’s chances of progressing.
Gbarpolu, who have completed their group matches, currently sit atop Group D with two points. Montserrado and Bong counties occupy second and third places respectively, with one point each.
Predictions had already suggested that any draw higher than 2-2 would see both Montserrado and Bong advancing from the group.
According to reports, the match has now been postponed and os expected to proceed at a later date.
