Breaking News: Real Madrid Fires Xabi Alonso After Spanish Super Cup Loss

SPAIN: Real Madrid Football Club has announced the contract termination of its Head Coach Xabi Alonso after a 3-2 defeat in the Spanish Super Cup Final on Sunday to rivals FC Barcelona.

Real Madrid announced the departure of Xabi Alonso on Monday, January 12th, stating that they have decided “by mutual agreement” to end his tenure as first-team coach.

Alonso signed a three-year deal for the Los Blancos, on May 25, 2025, but his stay was cut short, spending less than 9 months in charge.

Conversations about Xabi Alonso's dismissal sparked after Real Madrid began to grapple with inconsistency in form in recent matches.

His dismissal was prompted immediately after losing the Super Cup Final on Sunday, January 11, 2026. The German man recorded 24 wins, 4 draws, 6 losses in 34 games across all competitions in his short as Manager of Real Madrid.

The club's statement reads: "Real Madrid C. F. communicates that, by mutual agreement between the club and Xabi Alonso, it has been decided to end his time as coach of the first team.

Xabi Alonso will always have the affection and admiration of all Real Madrid because he is a legend of Real Madrid and has always represented the values of our club. Real Madrid will always be his home.

Our club thanks Xabi Alonso and all his technical team for their work and dedication throughout this time, and wishes them good luck in this new stage of their lives".

Meanwhile, Real Madrid has immediately appointed Álvaro Arbeloa, a former team player, as the new first team coach.
