Prisoner Helping Prisoners: Jewel Howard-Taylor Moves To Free Two Pregnant Women

MONROVIA, Liberia:Former Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor has extended financial and humanitarian assistance toward securing the release of two pregnant women detained at the Monrovia Central Prison, even as she remains behind bars herself amid an ongoing drug investigation.

The two women, identified as Kebbeh Pewee and Annie Kollie, were reportedly encountered by Madam Howard-Taylor during her own detention at the prison.

Pewee was facing an aggravated assault charge, while Kollie was facing a manslaughter charge. Both women are pregnant, a situation that reportedly drew the attention and concern of the former Vice President.

According to a statement from her office, Madam Howard-Taylor was moved by the circumstances of the two women and decided to provide assistance toward securing their release. Her office described the intervention as an act of benevolence toward women facing the difficult conditions of detention while pregnant.

“Moved by their circumstances,” the statement said, Madam Howard-Taylor “offered benevolent assistance toward securing their release.”

The development comes against the backdrop of Howard-Taylor's own detention at the same correctional facility as authorities continue an investigation involving a major drug case. Her supporters say her decision to assist others despite her own circumstances demonstrates compassion and concern for vulnerable detainees.

Court documents reportedly show that release orders for Pewee and Kollie were issued on August 28, 2026, clearing the way for their release from detention, subject to the applicable legal procedures.

Photos released in connection with the development reportedly show the two women alongside Sandra Howard, the eldest sister of Madam Jewel Howard-Taylor, with copies of the court-issued release orders also visible.

The intervention is now drawing attention because it comes from a former Vice President who is herself detained, with the episode portraying Howard-Taylor not only through the lens of the ongoing drug investigation but also as someone who, according to her office, chose to extend help to two pregnant women sharing the same prison environment.
