Recast Budget Deliberation on Hold; Speaker Koffa Seizes Motion Awaiting Special Investigative Committee Report

 By: William K. Howard

Capitol Hill: House Speaker, Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa on Thursday, August 29, 2024 took possession of a motion for the draft recast budget scrutiny, in line with the House Standing rules. That means; there will be no discussion on the draft national recast budget until the Special Investigative Committee, led by Representative Robert Wongbe, submits its report.

In a blunt statement, Thursday, 29 August, during the first day of the extraordinary session, Speaker Koffa emphasized that such a measure is in line with the House's commitment to promoting transparency and accountability within Liberia's governance system.

The head of the 55th Legislature reassured the public that the House remains dedicated to being open and accountable to the people of Liberia at all times.

He said “The scrutiny of the budget is a crucial process, and it is our responsibility to ensure that it is conducted with the utmost integrity and transparency. We will not proceed with any budget scrutiny, nor motion until the Special Investigative Committee completes its investigation and delivers its findings”.

Members of both the House of Representatives and the Liberian Senate commenced the extraordinary session on Thursday, August 29, 2024, and will continue until September 19, 2024 respectively.

At the same time, House Speaker Fonati Koffa used the medium, commending his colleagues for their commitment to return to work under what he termed as challenging conditions, including working without pay, to serve the interests of the Country.

“The dedication shown by my fellow Representatives in returning to work without compensation is evidence of their commitment to the welfare of our nation. This is a collective effort to ensure that we fulfill our duties in the best interest of Liberia,” added Speaker Koffa.
