River Gee County Books Early Quarterfinals Spot in Ongoing National County Sports Meet

HARPER, MARYLAND: River Gee County's Football and Kickball teams have qualified for the quarterfinals of the 2025/2026 National County Sports Meet in advanced with six points each in Group A.

The Fish Town boys and girls qualification came following their crucial victories over hosts Maryland County on Wednesday, December 17, 2025 at the Martha Tubman Sports Pitch in Harper City.

River Gee County's boys clinched a comfortable 3-1 in over the hosts, while their girls triumphed 1-0 in a highly contested kickball match.

The results recorded the second consecutive wins for River Gee County's Football and Kickball teams, paving the way for qualification despite having a game in hand to wrap up the group stage.

River Gee County began its campaign in the 2026/2026 National County Sports Meet on an impressive note. The county kicked off the tournament with stunning victories over River Cess County.

They secured a 2-0 win in football and triumphed 4-0 in Kickball over their fellow Southerners, River Cess County, before extending their dominance against Maryland County on Wednesday, December 17, on matchday three.

With six points, River Gee County sits comfortably atop Group A in both football and kickball standings. The one-time County Meet champions are four points cleared of second-placed Grand Kru County in Group A on the football log.

With only one left for each team in the group, River County is strongly protected by its leads. As it stands, no results in their final group-stage match against Grand Kru can affect or overturn their qualification.

In kickball, River Gee County holds a two-point advantage over closed rivals Grand Kru County. Mathematically, the lead guarantees them a top-two finish in the group, with their final match only determining whether they advance as group winners or runners-up.

However, River Gee has become the first county in this year's edition of the National County Sports Meet to qualify for the quarter-finals in both football and kickball categories. Their success with even a game to spare.

In another development, Grand Bassa County’s kickball team has also advanced to the quarterfinals of the tournament.

The Gbehzohn girls sealed qualification with a hard-earned 1–0 victory over Grand Cape Mount County on Wednesday in Buchanan City. It marked their second straight win in the competition, qualifying with six points in Group C.

The tournament's Group A includes hosts Maryland, River Cess, Grand Kru, and River Gee Counties.

Group B comprises Nimba, Bomi, Sinoe County, and Margibi Counties. Group C: holds Grand Bassa Lofa, Grand Gedeh, and Grand Cape Mount Counties

Group D consists of Gbarpolu, Bong, and Montserrado Counties

The National County Sports Meet is Liberia's most celebrated sporting festival, which unites the fifteenth political sub-divisions unite to compete in football, kickball and other sporting disciplines.

This year's tournament is being held under the theme: "Inclusive Development through Sports".
