Supreme Court Clears Path for House Majority Bloc, Denies Speaker Koffa’s Appeal
Monrovia—In a significant development in the ongoing leadership dispute within the House of Representatives, Justice-in-Chambers Yamie Quiqui Gbeisay has declined to issue a stay order requested by House Speaker Fonati Koffa.
The decision paves the way for the Majority Bloc to proceed with their planned actions.
Justice Gbeisay also lifted the writ of prohibition that had previously halted the Majority Bloc’s proceedings.
The ruling, delivered by Supreme Court Clerk Cllr. Sam Mankilu, stated, "By directive of His Honor Yamie Quiqui Gbeisay, Sr., Associate Justice presiding in Chambers, you are hereby informed that the Justice has declined to issue the writ prayed for. Meanwhile, the stay order of October 25, 2024, is hereby lifted."
The ruling comes amid an intense leadership dispute, with members of the House Majority Bloc accusing Justice Gbeisay of overstepping his authority by initially imposing the prohibition on their activities. Despite their grievances, the Majority Bloc attended a conference called by Justice Gbeisay, where he urged lawmakers to ensure due process was afforded to Speaker Koffa.
Following the conference, the Majority Bloc agreed to observe due process in the upcoming session. This latest ruling, however, represents a setback for Speaker Koffa’s efforts to secure the bloc’s compliance and maintain control.
As the situation unfolds, all eyes are on Capitol Hill, where lawmakers are set to reconvene next Thursday.
