“We Are Losing Our Produce And Our People”: Fetuah Residents Demand Urgent Road Action

DISTRICT #4, Bong County, Liberia — Residents of Fetuah and nearby communities in Electoral District #4, Bong County, say the worsening condition of their roads has become a daily struggle, cutting farmers off from markets and putting the lives of patients in danger.

The residents say farmers are forced to depend on motorcycles and other difficult means of transportation to move their produce, while some roads become nearly impassable during periods of heavy rainfall. They say the situation causes delays that often leave food crops spoiled before they can be sold.

For many farmers, the poor roads have turned agricultural production into a risky investment. After spending time and resources cultivating their farms, residents say they sometimes have no reliable way to transport the harvest to markets, resulting in financial losses and discouraging further farming.

The road crisis is also affecting access to healthcare. Residents say pregnant women, children and critically ill patients face serious difficulties reaching nearby clinics and Phebe Hospital, particularly when urgent transportation is required. They say motorcycles and vehicles frequently struggle through damaged and muddy sections of the roads.

With little government intervention, residents say they have resorted to using hand tools and community labor to repair some of the worst sections. However, they argue that these temporary efforts cannot replace proper road rehabilitation and the use of heavy-duty equipment.

The communities are now appealing directly to the Government of Liberia and Bong County authorities to include Fetuah in upcoming road rehabilitation efforts as the county prepares to receive its share of 287 yellow earth-moving machines. Residents say the equipment should be deployed to communities where poor roads are directly affecting agriculture, transportation and healthcare.

The residents say they have waited long enough for meaningful action and are losing hope that their road problems will be addressed. They are urging authorities to treat the Fetuah road situation as an urgent development and public-safety issue rather than allowing residents to continue struggling to maintain critical roads on their own.
