GAC Audit Reveals Financial Irregularities in Nimba County Funds
Monrovia, Liberia: The General Auditing Commission, or GAC, has uncovered several financial and administrative irregularities in the management of Nimba County’s County Development Fund and Social Development Fund during the administration of former Superintendent Kou Meapeh Gono Korquoi.
According to the audit, which covers the period from July 2018 to December 2023, Electoral District #8 was allocated more than US$158,000 under a county council resolution but received only about US$114,000, leaving a discrepancy of US$44,334. The report also found that Electoral District #5 received no funding from either the County Development Fund or Social Development Fund during the period under review.
The audit further revealed spending variances involving road works, spare parts, and equipment servicing, as well as procurement concerns surrounding contracts awarded to Khaili & Son. In addition, auditors reported that thousands of gallons of diesel fuel were purchased without authorization from the County Council.
The GAC is calling on county authorities and members of the Project Management Committee to provide explanations for the discrepancies and take corrective action.
The County Development Fund and Social Development Fund are intended to finance local development projects, including roads, schools, clinics, and other community initiatives across Liberia’s counties.
