LRA Urges Media To Strengthen Public Understanding Of Taxation
Monrovia, Liberia — The Liberia Revenue Authority is calling for stronger collaboration with the media to help Liberians better understand taxation and its role in financing public services and national development.
LRA Acting Communications Manager Jerry Laynumah Siakor made the call Thursday during the Press Union of Liberia’s 62nd anniversary celebration in Monrovia.
Siakor, speaking on behalf of the Authority, said an informed public is essential to improving voluntary tax compliance and strengthening domestic revenue mobilization.
He said the media has a responsibility to help make tax information easier for ordinary citizens to understand, particularly as Liberia seeks to increase domestic resources for national development.
According to Siakor, radio, television, newspapers, community outreach platforms and digital media can help explain tax requirements, address misinformation and give taxpayers better access to information about their rights and responsibilities.
He said effective communication can also help strengthen trust between taxpayers and the Revenue Authority.
“As Liberia strives toward greater self-reliance, we encourage the media to continue helping us build a culture where paying legitimate taxes is understood not merely as an obligation but as a civic contribution to building the Liberia we all desire,” Siakor said.
He urged media institutions to expand public education on taxation, particularly in communities where access to tax information may be limited.
Siakor said stronger cooperation between the LRA and the media could help citizens better understand how domestic revenue supports government programs and public services.
“At the LRA, we recognize the media as an important partner in domestic revenue mobilization. Through accurate reporting, public education, and constructive engagement, the media helps citizens understand the importance of taxation and how tax revenues contribute to national development,” he said.
He added that greater public understanding and trust could contribute to a stronger culture of voluntary compliance.
Meanwhile, Siakor congratulated the Press Union of Liberia on its 62nd anniversary, describing the media as an important institution in promoting public accountability and giving citizens access to information on national issues.
The anniversary celebration was held under the theme, “Empowering Independent Media for Democracy, Accountability, and Sustainable Development.”
The event brought together media practitioners, representatives of public and private institutions, and other stakeholders.
