Superintendents Seek Government Support for Increased County Development Fund
By: Benjamin Keibah
In a recent series of confirmation hearings before the Senate Committee on Internal Affairs and Rural Development, several county superintendents voiced a pressing concern: the need for a significant boost in the County Development Fund (CDF).
Among those advocating for the increase from US$200,000 to US$1 million were nominees facing confirmation, including Whioway Bryant from Montserrado, Alex Chersia Grant from Grand Gedeh, and Henry Cole from Maryland, among others representing various counties.
Chairing the Senate Committee is Nimba County Senator, Prince Y. Johnson, alongside co-chair Bomi County Senator Edwin Melvin Snowe.
The nominees emphasized that the current yearly allocation of US$200,000 for each county is insufficient to drive meaningful development. They argued that such a limited budget hampers their ability to address the pressing needs of their respective counties effectively.
Highlighting the importance of their request, the nominees stressed that an increased CDF allocation would not only accelerate growth and development but also facilitate the implementation of the President’s agenda, known as ARREST.
Additionally, the nominees underscored the significant challenges faced by each county, including issues related to adherence to the rule of law, supervision of ongoing and implemented national projects, and the maintenance of peace and stability.
Expressing gratitude, the nominees thanked President Joseph Nyuma Boakai for their nominations to the position of County Superintendents, affirming their commitment to serving their communities and the nation at large.
