Breaking News: Former Police Hierarchy Charged in Liberia's Biggest Drug Case

Monrovia, Liberia: The Liberia National Police has charged and forwarded dismissed Police Commissioner for Crime Services, Johnny Dean, to court in the ongoing drug trafficking case.

Dean has been charged with criminal conspiracy, bribery, tampering with criminal investigation, and obstruction of government functions by a public servant.

According to a police charge sheet, he allegedly received US$10,000 from individuals linked with a drug cartel in the US$317.68 million cocaine case.

Police allege that Dean used his official position to disclose secret information to drug cartel members and undermined the nature of the investigation.

The former Police Commissioner had reportedly admitted to receiving a US$10,000 but told investigators the money was given to him for quote-on-quote treasure purposes.

The relevation on July 23, 2026 resulted in the immediate relief of Johnny Dean of his duties, for internal investigation through the LNP's Professional Standard Division.

With the case now going to court, investigators are accusing Dean of abusing his authority then as Crime Services Commissioner, by reportedly interfering with an active investigation.

He joins the list with other top figures including former Liberian Vice President Jewel Howard Taylor who are facing charges in the US$317.68 million cocaine bust, the largest-ever drug discovery in Liberia.

Legal luminaries say charges brought against Johnny Dean remain allegations until they are proven in a competent court of jurisdiction.
