Government Official Gabriel Montgomery Sets Sights on Grand Bassa Senate Seat in 2029

Monrovia, Liberia: Although Liberia’s 2029 Presidential and Legislative Elections remain several years away, early political maneuvering is already beginning to shape what could become a highly competitive senatorial contest in Grand Bassa County.

Among the names generating increasing attention is Gabriel Y. Montgomery, a senior government official currently serving as Deputy Commissioner General for Technical Affairs at the Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA), one of the institution’s top executive positions. Montgomery has held the post since 2023 and is responsible for overseeing key technical and operational functions within the country’s revenue administration. (Liberia Revenue Authority)

Speaking during a news conference in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, Montgomery publicly dismissed reports suggesting that he is considering a run for the House of Representatives, making it clear that his political ambitions lie elsewhere.

I have no room for a representative seat. We are keeping our eyes on the bigger ball,” Montgomery declared.

While he stopped short of officially announcing a candidacy for the Senate, his comments have further fueled speculation that he intends to contest the Grand Bassa senatorial seat currently held by President Pro-Tempore of the Senate, Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence.

Montgomery described reports linking him to a representative race as misinformation being circulated by political operatives. He noted that there are currently no legislative vacancies and stressed that any decision to seek elected office would be announced by him directly.

Throughout the briefing, the LRA executive maintained that his immediate focus remains on his professional responsibilities and humanitarian initiatives across Grand Bassa County. However, he also suggested that growing discussions about his possible candidacy reflect increasing public demand for political change.

The remarks have strengthened perceptions that Montgomery is positioning himself for a possible Senate run in 2029. Political observers in Grand Bassa have increasingly identified him as a potential challenger in what could become one of the county’s most closely watched electoral contests.

Montgomery, who earned public recognition during his tenure as Chairman of the Bassa Sports Association, has seen his political profile rise significantly in recent years. His latest comments are being interpreted by many as the clearest indication yet that he may be preparing for a future bid for Grand Bassa County’s highest elected position.

For now, the senior government official remains focused on his duties at the Liberia Revenue Authority, but his reference to pursuing the “bigger ball” has only intensified speculation that a 2029 senatorial campaign may already be taking shape behind the scenes.
