The opposition Alternative National Congress (ANC) has suffered as the latest critic to the appointment of Weedor by President Joseph Boakia to lead the commission.

The ANC says while Jonathan K. Weedor has served the commission in different positions and may hold the experience and competence, his independence remains questioned.

The Party's National Chairman Lafayette Gould argued that Weedor’s apparent support for the Unity Party during the 2023 Presidential and Legislative elections comprises his independence to serve as NEC Chairperson.

The ANC referenced a widely circulated video in which nominee Weedor was predicting a first-round victory for the then opposition Unity Party, which the party later ended up winning in the run off to claim state power.

The footage captured Weedor declaring: "With more than 90% of the record of count, across all the centers in Liberia available with the UP Alliance, it is cleared that the UP Alliance will win a one round victory".

In a strongly worded statement issued Thursday, ANC Chairman Gould said the move presents a perceived loyalty of the new NEC Chairperson to the ruling Unity Party.

He warned that such perceptions, whether proven or not, could erode public trust in the NEC at a time when confidence in democratic institutions remains fragile.

"His past conduct undermines confidence in his ability to oversee elections in a neutral and nonpartisan manner", he stated.

The opposition ANC described the National Election Commission as a cornerstone of Liberia’s democracy, and said its leadership must embody the highest standards of integrity, neutrality, and independence.

The party cautioned that any compromise in these principles could heighten political tensions and cast doubt over the legitimacy of future elections.

The ANC is now urging the Liberian Senate to conduct a rigorous and transparent vetting of the nomination made by President Joseph Boakia.

Jonathan K. Weedor was appointed on March 30, 2026, replacing outgoing NEC Chairperson Davidetta Browne-Lansanah who tendered her resignation last month.

Despite the criticisms, the government through the Executive has expressed confidence that the designated NEC will maintain the credibility of elections in Liberia.
