Government Moves to Reclaim Zayzay Community Land in Paynesville

Paynesville, Liberia: The Managing Director of the National Housing Authority, Florence Geegbae, has declared that the entire Zayzay Community in Paynesville belongs to the Liberian government and will eventually be reclaimed for development purposes.

Speaking on the Punch Breakfast Show, Geegbae said residents currently occupying the area are encroaching on government-owned property, adding that authorities are already engaging people living in the community.

The entire Zayzay Community in Paynesville is owned by the government and we will reclaim it,” she stated. “Those people you see there have been encroaching, and we are having conversation with them.”

According to her, the government cannot abandon the property because it was originally acquired for national development purposes.

We cannot forget about that land because that place needs to be developed. It was the purpose for which the government acquired the place,” Geegbae added.

Her comments are expected to spark public debate and concern among residents of the densely populated Zayzay Community, many of whom have lived in the area for years.

The statement also raises fresh questions about possible future demolitions, relocation plans, compensation, and the government’s broader urban development agenda in Paynesville.
