Grand Bassa Breaks Ground for US$482,000 Maternity Hospital to Improve Maternal Care
BUCHANAN, Grand Bassa County — Grand Bassa County has broken ground for the construction of a US$482,000 modern maternity hospital in District #2, a project expected to improve access to maternal and child healthcare for women and families in the district and surrounding communities.
The groundbreaking ceremony was held Tuesday, August 18, in New York Town, bringing together officials of the Grand Bassa County Administration, District #2 Representative Hon. Clarence Banks, community members and other stakeholders.
Speaking at the ceremony, Grand Bassa County Superintendent Hon. Karyou Johnson described the project as an important investment in the health and well-being of women and children.
Johnson said the new facility is expected to reduce the challenges pregnant women face in accessing quality maternal healthcare, particularly those who must travel long distances to seek medical care during pregnancy and childbirth.
According to the Superintendent, the US$482,000 facility will be constructed by Innova Construction Company.
He said the project demonstrates the County Administration’s commitment to expanding access to quality healthcare and improving medical infrastructure across Grand Bassa County.
Adding further support to the project, District #2 Representative Hon. Clarence Banks has pledged approximately US$200,000 to procure medical equipment for the new hospital.
Banks said his contribution is intended to ensure that the facility is not only completed but also properly equipped to provide essential maternal and child health services.
The representative said the investment is aimed at ensuring residents of District #2 and neighboring communities have access to essential healthcare without having to travel long distances.
When completed, the maternity hospital is expected to strengthen healthcare delivery in District #2, provide safer and more accessible maternal services, and reduce the burden on expectant mothers seeking care outside their communities.
The project is being viewed as a significant step toward improving maternal healthcare and strengthening medical infrastructure in Grand Bassa County.
