LNP Condemns Violence at Protest, Identifies Three Persons of Interest
Monrovia, Liberia: The Liberia National Police (LNP) has strongly condemned acts of violence that occurred during a protest in Monrovia on Tuesday, warning that such actions threaten public safety, undermine democratic values, and will not be tolerated.
In an official statement released after the incident, the LNP reaffirmed that peaceful assembly and freedom of expression are constitutional rights guaranteed to all Liberians. The police said they remain committed to facilitating lawful protests and ensuring that citizens can express their views without fear.
“The Liberia National Police fully recognizes and respects the constitutional right of citizens to peacefully assemble and express themselves,” the statement said. “Our role is to facilitate lawful protests in a manner that protects public safety and democratic freedoms.”
However, the police noted that the protest, which initially began peacefully, later descended into violence, intimidation, and the destruction of property. According to the LNP, these actions disrupted public order and placed the lives of protesters, security personnel, and members of the public at risk.
“The acts of violence witnessed during today’s protest undermined public order, endangered lives and property, and diverted the protest from its lawful and peaceful purpose,” the LNP said. “Violence, intimidation, and the destruction of property are inconsistent with democratic engagement and will not be tolerated.”
As part of what the police described as a professional, evidence-based, and impartial investigation, three individuals—Mr. Mulbah Morlu, Mr. Alvin Wesseh, and Mr. Archie Pompom—have been identified as persons of interest in connection with the violent incidents.
“The Liberia National Police has identified these individuals as persons of interest and is calling on them to cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation,” the statement said. The police also urged anyone with information relevant to the incidents to come forward and assist investigators.
The LNP further appealed to the public to remain calm as investigations continue, stressing the importance of maintaining peace and respecting the rule of law.
“We urge all citizens to remain calm and to use peaceful and lawful means to express their grievances,” the police added. “The LNP remains committed to upholding the rule of law while ensuring that the rights and freedoms of all Liberians are respected.”
The police assured the public that accountability will be pursued in line with the law and emphasized that peaceful dialogue, rather than violence, remains the foundation of Liberia’s democratic process.
