Weah Labels Boakia: Sensible Political Critic

Former Liberian President George Weah has revealed that he was perceived as a political enemy by critics during his regime, many of whom, he said, declined his good gestures, unlike the incumbent President, Joseph Boakai. Weah stated that despite political differences, then opposition leader, Boakia, accepted his intervention at a crucial moment to sponsor his (Boakia) medical services outside the country. Weah Labels Boakia: Sensible Political Critic

Monrovia, Liberia: Former Liberian President George Weah has revealed that he was perceived as a political enemy by critics during his regime, many of whom, he said, declined his good gestures, unlike the incumbent President, Joseph Boakai.

Weah stated that despite political differences, then opposition leader, Boakia, accepted his intervention at a crucial moment to sponsor his (Boakia) medical services outside the country. K-News cannot independently verify the claim made by the ex-Liberian President.

However, Weah said that the acceptance of his goodwill gestures at the time by opposition figures was rare, reflecting that others vowed to prefer being in need or giving up ghosts rather than entertaining his intervention.

Speaking on Sunday, May 3, 2026, during the dedication of the new Head office of his Radio Station (King's FM) in Paynesville, the former President characterized incumbent President Boakai as the 'only sensible' critic who he said benefited from his gesture despite the political heat that was obtaining under his administration.

Weah underscored that the intervention was made when critics including Boakia were of vocal his leadership and perceived he was uneasy with opposition figures.

"Most of them, and I hope they hear this, I am not their enemy. Some of them were sick and I walked to them and said I will take you to the hospital, they say no, then let me die".

"The only sensible person who believes that I am an enemy and I said let me take you to hospital and said yes, was Joseph Boakai", George Weah asserted.

Political pundits believe the latest revelation from ex-President Weah underscored a growing political division in Liberia, especially between ruling party officials and opposition figures.

Pundits say politicians have over the years affected unity and sidelined the best interests of the country. Weah and Boakia have been political rivals in Liberia for nearly a decade.

George Weah was defeated in the 2023 polls by incumbent President Joseph Boakai. He has since been vocal against the current administration with speculation that he intends to seek re-election in 2029.
