Breaking News: Kogar Seeks Elders’ Mediation in Dispute With VP Koung

Nimba County, Liberia: Nimba County Senator Samuel G. Kogar has appealed to traditional elders of the county to intervene and help reconcile his ongoing dispute with Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung.

Senator Kogar called for unity, mutual respect, and calm, stressing that peace among Nimba’s political leaders is essential to the county’s development and stability.

The appeal comes amid rising political tensions in Nimba following a reported clash between Senator Kogar and Vice President Koung, sparked by growing political competition for influence in the county after the death of former Senator Prince Yormie Johnson in November 2024.

Reports indicate that Senator Kogar recently rejected claims that Vice President Koung “made him senator,” insisting that his mandate was earned through the ballot box and not through political patronage.

Kogar has also been quoted as telling supporters that he was not appointed or politically created by any individual, emphasizing that he was elected by the people and would not remain silent to protect political favors.

In remarks widely interpreted as directed at the Vice President, Kogar reportedly stated that Koung is the Vice President of Liberia and not the “chief of Nimba,” adding that no leader should act as both “referee and football player.” He further indicated his readiness to confront political challenges if necessary.

The reported dispute is also linked to concerns over internal party decisions, including allegations that the Vice President supported a candidate for a District #5 by-election without Senator Kogar’s involvement.

Meanwhile, Vice President Koung has publicly denied that any rift exists, dismissing the matter as rumor and insisting he would still support Senator Kogar if elections were held again.
