President Boakai nominates Jonathan K. Weedor as NEC Chairman following Davidetta Browne-Lansanah’s resignation, appointing him Acting Chair pending Senate confirmation.
Executive Mansion: President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has nominated Jonathan K. Weedor as Chairman of the National Elections Commission (NEC), replacing outgoing Chairperson Davidetta Browne-Lansanah.
The nomination comes following Browne-Lansanah’s resignation, marking a significant leadership transition at Liberia’s electoral body.
According to an Executive Mansion release, Weedor is no stranger to the NEC. He previously served as Commissioner from 2004 to 2020, where he handled key responsibilities including human resources, finance, and procurement. He also served as Acting Co-Chairman, playing a central role in managing Liberia’s elections.
Weedor brings regional experience as well, having participated in election observation and support missions in countries including Kenya, Ghana, and Nigeria, along with engagements under the African Union and ECOWAS.
Academically, he holds a Master’s degree in Development Studies from the United States and a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Liberia.
Pending Senate confirmation, President Boakai has instructed that Weedor immediately serve as Acting Chairman during the Senate’s recess.
The President says the appointment is aimed at strengthening transparency, independence, and credibility within Liberia’s electoral system.
