BREAKING NEWS: Supreme Court Jails Prophet Key for Six Months Over Contempt
Monrovia — The Supreme Court of Liberia has sentenced Justin Opa Yeazeahn, widely known as Prophet Key, to six months’ imprisonment after finding him guilty of contempt of court.
The ruling follows Yeazeahn’s appearance before the Full Bench, where he admitted that his recent social media comments targeting Chief Justice Yarmie Quiqui Gbeisay were contemptuous.
During the proceedings, Prophet Key acknowledged that his language crossed the line and pleaded with the Court for leniency.
“I promise you that I will not cuss or abuse again,” he told the Justices, expressing regret for his statements and vowing to reform his conduct.
The contempt case stemmed from a series of Facebook broadcasts in which Yeazeahn made allegations against the Chief Justice and used language the Court considered abusive and inappropriate.
Defense lawyers informed the Bench that their client accepted full responsibility for his actions and had formally apologized in writing.
Court-appointed amici curiae argued that while the Constitution guarantees freedom of speech, those rights are not absolute and do not protect abusive attacks on individuals or state institutions.
In delivering its decision, the Supreme Court ruled that Yeazeahn’s conduct constituted contempt and warranted punishment.
The judgment is expected to have broader implications for public commentary, particularly on social media, and reinforces the Court’s position on the limits of free expression when it intersects with the dignity of the judiciary.
