Civilian Receiving Treatment Following Alleged Police Shooting
Japan Freeway, Liberia: The Liberia National Police (LNP) has launched an investigation into a shooting incident that occurred early Thursday morning in the Chicken Soup Factory Community, Gardnersville, following tensions linked to the arrest of a suspected armed robber.
Initial reports alleged that a police officer assigned to Zone 4 shot and killed a civilian identified as Solomon during a confrontation between officers and commercial motorcyclists. However, the LNP has clarified that no death was recorded during the incident.
According to police authorities, officers responded after receiving information that angry residents had allegedly surrounded a residence where a suspected armed robbery suspect had reportedly taken refuge. The crowd was reportedly attempting to set the house ablaze before police intervened to restore calm and prevent what authorities described as a potential act of mob violence.
During the intervention, one individual sustained a gunshot injury under circumstances that remain under investigation. The victim, identified by residents as Solomon, was immediately taken to the John F. Kennedy Medical Center, where he is currently receiving treatment.
The Liberia National Police said the incident involving the discharge of a firearm is being treated with “seriousness and professionalism,” adding that an internal review is underway in line with established operational and accountability procedures.
The LNP also cautioned members of the public against spreading misinformation on social media and warned against acts of vigilantism and mob justice, emphasizing that all suspects are entitled to due process under Liberian law.
