Cummings Says ANC Not Affected by NEC Concerns Over Underperforming Political Parties
Monrovia, Liberia: Alternative National Congress (ANC) Political Leader Alexander Cummings has dismissed concerns that his party could be affected by electoral regulations targeting underperforming political parties.
Speaking during an interview on Sky FM’s 50/50 program, Cummings responded to discussions surrounding the National Elections Commission’s (NEC) concerns about parties that failed to meet required electoral performance thresholds.
According to Cummings, the issue being discussed applies to the former Collaborating Political Parties (CPP) and not the ANC. He argued that under the law, a political party can only be barred if specific conditions are met, noting that the CPP elected lawmakers despite receiving a low percentage of votes.
He further stated that the ANC is not affected by the matter because it was not on the ballot as a standalone party during the 2023 elections. Cummings maintained that the law applies to political institutions rather than individuals.
The ANC leader described the controversy as politically motivated and intended to create a distraction, adding that election officials are familiar with the law and will apply it accordingly.
When asked about a possible presidential bid in 2029, Cummings said several people have encouraged him to run, but emphasized that politics remains dynamic and that he is focused on current issues.
Cummings made the remarks while appearing on Sky FM’s 50/50 talk show, where he addressed a range of political topics, including the NEC’s concerns over underperforming political parties.
