Education Ministry Drops Heavy Sanctions on St. Theresa Convent Over Indecent School Performance

Monrovia, Liberia: The Ministry of Education has handed down strong punitive measures against the St. Theresa Convent Catholic School following its investigation into an inappropriate performance recently held on the school’s campus.

According to the Ministry, the event featured acts of indecent exposure in the presence of students a clear breach of child-protection rules, duty of care, and school-supervision standards.

Officials say the school’s leadership was invited to a formal conference to address the matter, but no administrator appeared, nor did the school send any written explanation for their absence. The Ministry described this noncompliance as a violation of statutory requirements for school accountability.

Under the Education Reform Act, the national Code of Conduct for Schools, and related regulations, the Ministry has now issued the following sanctions:

  1. LRD 500,000 fine payable within 14 days
  2. Mandatory disciplinary action against staff responsible for student supervision during the event, with proof of action to be submitted
  3. A nationwide ban on artist Christoph the Change from performing at any school-related program for the rest of the academic year
  4. A written apology and corrective action plan from the school’s administration
  5. Student counseling and parental engagement to be coordinated through the Montserrado County Education Office

The Ministry says these measures are aimed at protecting students, restoring proper oversight within schools, and reinforcing national safeguarding standards.

In a statement, the Ministry stressed that student safety is non-negotiable, and any institution that fails to uphold required protocols will face full enforcement under the law.

Meanwhile, Christoph the Change has issued a public response following the Ministry of Education decision to impose a nationwide ban on his participation in school-related events for the rest of the academic year.

The Ministry’s sanction stemmed from the February 7 incident at St. Theresa Convent Catholic School, where an inappropriate performance occurred in front of students an act the Ministry classified as a major breach of child-safeguarding and supervision standards.

In his statement, the artist said he respects the Ministry’s ruling and intends to use the period as a moment of reflection. He again apologized to students, staff, parents, and anyone offended by his actions, saying he remains grateful for the opportunity to “reset” and learn from the episode.
