Five Arrested Over Alleged Gang Rape of 21-Year-Old Woman in Voinjama

Voinjama City, Lofa County: The Liberia National Police (LNP) have arrested five young men in connection with the alleged gang rape of a 21-year-old woman in Zurzumai Town, Voinjama District.

Police said the incident occurred around 2:22 p.m. on January 1, 2026, during New Year’s Day celebrations. The suspects were arrested by the Women and Children Protection Section (WACPS) of the LNP and are currently being held at the Women’s Section of the Voinjama City Police Depot.

Those arrested have been identified as James Y. Kollie, 18; Albert Thomas, 21; Prince Junior, 18; and Guwor Kollieson, 17. Police confirmed that investigations are ongoing, while the victim’s identity has been withheld for her protection.

According to preliminary police findings, the victim told investigators that she was lured to a secluded area by the group during an early-morning dance event. She alleged that one of the suspects slapped her before she was forcibly taken to a nearby house, believed to belong to a man identified as Amos Kokulah, where she was sexually assaulted by multiple individuals.

During questioning, all suspects denied involvement in the rape. However, police said suspect Albert Thomas admitted allowing one of the accused to be alone with the victim in a room at his friend’s house, claiming he was unaware of any assault taking place.

The victim was later referred to Tellewoyan Memorial Hospital for medical examination and treatment. Medical reports, according to police, indicate signs consistent with sexual assault.

The five suspects have since been formally charged with rape and are awaiting court proceedings. Meanwhile, civil society organizations in Lofa County have strongly condemned the alleged act and are calling for a speedy trial and full prosecution in line with the law.
