House Weighs Bill to Expand Technical and Vocational Education Through Bong Mines Institute

Capitol Hill Liberia:The Plenary of the House of Representatives has begun legislative consideration of a bill seeking to establish the Bong Mines Vocational Training Institute, a proposed public institution aimed at expanding technical and vocational education and equipping Liberians with practical workforce skills.

The decision came after Bong County Electoral District #7 Representative, Hon. Foday Edward Fahnbulleh, submitted the draft legislation during a plenary session, prompting lawmakers to forward it to the Committees on Education and Public Administration, Judiciary, and Ways, Means and Finance for review within two weeks.

The proposed legislation, titled "An Act to Establish the Bong Mines Vocational Training Institute (BMVTI) as a Semi-Autonomous Public Institution for Technical and Vocational Education," seeks to create a structured institution dedicated to providing vocational and technical training for young people, residents of Bong County, and other Liberians.

Presenting the bill, Representative Fahnbulleh said the establishment of the institute supports the government's efforts to strengthen technical education and build a skilled workforce capable of driving national development.

"This initiative aligns with the government's broader agenda of promoting mass education and developing a highly skilled workforce capable of meeting the demands of a growing economy," Representative Fahnbulleh told fellow lawmakers.

He said the institution would offer specialized training programs designed to improve employment opportunities, promote entrepreneurship, and empower citizens with practical skills needed in key sectors of the economy.

"The institute will provide targeted training in specialized technical disciplines intended to foster economic self-reliance, enhance workforce capacity, and contribute to sustainable regional development," he explained.

Representative Fahnbulleh also emphasized that establishing the institute would create lasting socio-economic opportunities, particularly for young people and communities in Bong County, while strengthening Liberia's technical education sector.

Following deliberations, the House Plenary mandated the joint committees to conduct a comprehensive review of the proposed legislation and submit their findings and recommendations within two weeks for further legislative consideration.
