Liberia Signs $49M Road Deal to Link River Gee and Grand Gedeh Counties
Monrovia, Liberia: The Government of Liberia has signed a major infrastructure contract with China Railway Seventh Group for the paving of a 61.5-kilometer road corridor connecting Kelipo, Putuken, and John Davis Town in southeastern Liberia.
The project forms part of Phase III of the Mano River Union Road Development & Transport Facilitation Programme, a regional initiative funded by the African Development Bank aimed at improving transport networks and trade across member states.
Valued at approximately $49 million, the road project is expected to be completed by 2029. Once finished, it will significantly enhance connectivity between River Gee County and Grand Gedeh County, two regions often challenged by poor road infrastructure.
Government officials say the development will reduce travel time, cut transportation costs, and improve access to markets, particularly benefiting rural communities that rely heavily on agriculture and small-scale trade.
Beyond local impact, the initiative is expected to strengthen regional trade and economic integration within the Mano River Union corridor. The road will serve as a strategic link in broader cross-border infrastructure efforts, positioning southeastern Liberia as a more active participant in regional commerce and development.
