Liberian Legislature Salutes AFL at 69, Reaffirms Commitment to a Stronger, Professional Military

Monrovia, Liberia: Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon and members of the 55th Legislature have marked Liberia’s 69th Armed Forces Day with a strong message of appreciation and renewed commitment to the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL), praising the military as a pillar of peace, democracy, and national stability.

In a statement issued to commemorate the anniversary, the Legislature honored the men and women of the AFL for their service to the nation.

“This historic day provides our nation with the opportunity to honor the courage, patriotism, discipline, and unwavering commitment demonstrated by the members of the Armed Forces of Liberia in safeguarding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our beloved Republic,” the message said.

Reflecting on the AFL’s long journey, Speaker Koon and his colleagues noted that the military has become a symbol of national resilience. “For sixty-nine years, the Armed Forces of Liberia have stood as a symbol of national pride, resilience, and service above self,” the Legislature declared.

The lawmakers also commended the AFL’s expanding role beyond traditional security duties, highlighting its work in peacekeeping and national development. “We recognize and commend the professionalism and dedication with which the AFL continues to execute its constitutional mandate, from peacekeeping operations to disaster response, infrastructure support, and national development initiatives,” the statement quoted.

Reaffirming the Legislature’s commitment to the armed forces, the Speaker assured continued backing for reforms and modernization. “As representatives of the Liberian people, we reaffirm our steadfast support to the ongoing modernization and capacity-building efforts of the Armed Forces of Liberia,” Koon said, adding that lawmakers will “continue to enact and strengthen legislative frameworks that promote the welfare, training, and operational readiness of our military personnel.”

The message also paid tribute to those who have served in uniform over the decades. “To the brave servicemen and women, past and present, we express our deepest gratitude for your sacrifices and service,” the Legislature stated, while also recognizing military families for their “strength and resilience.”

Looking to the future, the House leadership called on all Liberians to uphold unity and peace. “On this 69th Armed Forces Day celebration, may we all be reminded of our shared responsibility to uphold peace, unity, and national security,” the statement concluded, expressing hope that the AFL will “continue to grow from strength to strength as a pillar of stability and a guardian of our democratic values.”
