Police IG Demands Morlu Turn Over Alleged Gun; Morlu Denies Possession, Accuses Police Chief of Threatening Him

MONROVIA, LIBERIA: Liberia’s Inspector General of Police, Gregory Coleman, has publicly called on STAND Chairman Mulbah Morlu to turn over an alleged firearm, warning that its possession constitutes a criminal offense.

Morlu! Bring that gun. We know you got it, and it constitutes a criminal offense. Bring it now, now,” Police Inspector General Coleman said.

In response, Morlu denied having a gun and accused the police chief of threatening his life.

I want to make it clear: I am not afraid of you. I’m not scared. If you want to send police officers to arrest me tonight, go ahead,” Morlu said.

Morlu questioned the basis of the police chief’s demand, asking: “You are threatening my life by demanding that I produce a gun. Do I look like someone who has a gun?”

He further accused the police of responsibility for violence during Friday’s protest, alleging that people were sent to attack protesters and that the situation could have resulted in a “bloodbath.”

If your conscience were clear, you would be thanking me,” Morlu said. “Instead, because I believe you are the mastermind behind this dangerous situation, you are now panicking.”

Morlu also linked the confrontation to Liberia’s ongoing drug crisis, saying: “You think that by killing more people, you will stop this drug crisis. It will not.”

The exchange follows Friday’s protest in Monrovia, during which tensions and confrontations were reported.

The allegations made by both Coleman and Morlu have not been independently verified.
