Senator Dillon Introduces Bill to Establish Claims Court of Liberia

Monrovia, Liberia: Montserrado County Senator Darius Dillon has submitted a bill in the Liberian Senate seeking to establish a specialized Claims Court of Liberia dedicated to handling cases involving compensation and government liability.

The proposed legislation, titled “An Act to Establish the Claims Court of Liberia,” was formally introduced and read for the first time during Thursday’s plenary session.

According to Senator Dillon, the bill is designed to improve legal options for individuals, businesses, and institutions pursuing claims against the Government of Liberia. He indicated that the proposed court would focus on matters arising from alleged wrongful actions by the state, contractual disputes, and instances where government actions require compensation.

The lawmaker stated that the initiative aims to reinforce constitutional protections outlined in Articles 20 and 22 of the 1986 Constitution, which address due process and property rights. He emphasized the need for a clearer and more organized framework for resolving compensation-related disputes involving the state.

If passed into law, the Claims Court would introduce consistent procedures for submitting and adjudicating claims. The measure also seeks to enhance fairness, transparency, and accountability in how compensation decisions are made.

Legislative observers note that the proposal could streamline the handling of claims against the government and reduce inefficiencies often associated with such cases.

Following its first reading, the bill is expected to proceed to a second reading before being referred to appropriate Senate committees for detailed review and recommendations.
