Snowe Apologizes to Samuel Nagbe, Withdraws Senate Remarks After Public Backlash

Monrovia: Bomi County Senator Edwin Snowe has apologized to Samuel Nagbe and formally withdrawn remarks he made during a recent Senate sitting after the comments sparked widespread public criticism.

During the session, Snowe directed remarks at Nagbe, saying: “You spend the whole day on Facebook writing posts, and you are getting drunk all day. You need to cut down on your alcohol intake.” The comments quickly circulated on social media and generated mixed reactions from the public.

In a statement issued Wednesday, Senator Snowe disclosed that he personally contacted Nagbe to express regret over the incident.

“This morning I reached out to Mr. Samuel Nagbe and expressed regrets about the statement made to him during yesterday’s sitting, and I believe we had a good conversation,” Snowe wrote.

The senator also announced that he has formally written the President Pro Tempore and his colleagues in the Liberian Senate to withdraw the remarks. He acknowledged that he made the comments without first being recognized by the presiding officer, an action he admitted violated the Senate’s Standing Rules.

Meanwhile, Presidential Tourism Ambassador Chris Onanuga condemned Snowe’s remarks in a strongly worded statement, describing them as disrespectful toward Nagbe, whom he referred to as a senior government official. Onanuga also criticized the senator’s conduct during the Senate proceedings.

The incident has fueled public debate over decorum, professionalism, and respect in Liberia’s political discourse, with many calling on public officials to maintain civility during official proceedings.
