Unity Party Chairman Tarpeh Blasts Tweah: ‘Your Claims Are Trash!
Monrovia, Liberia: Political tensions over Liberia’s poverty statistics have intensified following statements by former Finance Minister Samuel Tweah and a strong response from Unity Party Chairman Rev. Luther Tarpeh.
During an interview on the popular local radio program, Tweah revealed that the Weah administration inherited a poverty population of approximately 2.6 million Liberians, which grew to 3.2 million by the end of their term. He added that the current administration has maintained the number at 3.2 million, suggesting no further increase.
“The confession of Tweah has ended the bread-and-butter debate,” commentators noted, emphasizing that the previous administration reportedly added 600,000 Liberians to the extreme poverty bracket. Supporters of the current administration hailed the figures as evidence that President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s government is stabilizing the nation’s bread-and-butter challenges.
In response, Unity Party Chairman Rev. Luther Tarpeh dismissed Tweah’s statements as “trash.” He criticized Tweah for claiming the previous government lifted Liberians out of poverty despite being voted out of office. Tarpeh also accused Tweah and his allies of using propaganda to undermine the Unity Party.
“Samuel Tweah, you keep blowing your baseless trumpet,” Tarpeh wrote. “The Unity Party will continue to modernize our country. Frankly, we are not concerned about 2029. Our utmost concern is to serve the Liberian people with distinction.”
The exchange highlights the deepening political debate over poverty alleviation in Liberia as the country prepares for the 2029 elections, with both parties seeking to shape public perception through economic performance records.
