CDC Headquarters Faces Possible Demolition Over Tubman Boulevard Expansion

Monrovia, Liberia: The new headquarters of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) is facing possible disruption as the Government of Liberia moves ahead with plans to expand Tubman Boulevard into a six-lane roadway.

The proposed expansion, which will see three lanes constructed on each side of the boulevard, is part of a broader effort to ease traffic congestion along one of Monrovia’s busiest corridors. Authorities say several structures along the route are expected to be affected by a large-scale demolition exercise.

Among the buildings likely to be impacted is the CDC headquarters currently under construction in Congo Town. The structure sits just a few meters from the existing asphalt pavement, raising concerns that portions of it may have to be removed to make way for the road project.

Construction at the site is ongoing, with reports indicating that much of the work is being carried out at night.

Speaking during a Ministry of Information press briefing, Public Works Minister Roland Giddings confirmed that the road expansion project is expected to commence in 2027.

If implemented as planned, the development could pose a major setback for the CDC project, potentially forcing redesigns or resulting in significant financial losses tied to demolition and reconstruction.

Meanwhile, security officers assigned to the construction site claim that former President George Weah has restricted journalists from live-streaming, taking photographs, or recording activities at the site during nighttime operations. The claim has not been independently verified.
