Former Lone Star Captain Sam Johnson Blasts Ex-President Weah Over Liberia Football Struggles
International Sports News: Former Liberia national team captain Sam Johnson has publicly criticized former President George Weah following Weah’s appearance in the United States to support his son, Timothy Weah, during activities surrounding the announcement of the U.S. Men’s National Team squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In a strongly worded statement posted online, Sam Johnson acknowledged that every parent would naturally feel proud seeing their child reach such a major milestone in international football. However, he accused the former Liberian leader of failing to improve the country’s national football teams while serving as president.
“We put you there to help push our national team to get to that stage but you were very wicked to the National teams,” Johnson wrote, expressing disappointment over what he believes was a missed opportunity to transform Liberian football under the leadership of one of Africa’s greatest football legends.
Johnson further argued that despite George Weah’s global football reputation and historic achievements, his presidency did not produce meaningful progress for Liberia’s men’s and women’s national teams. His comments have since sparked fresh debate among football supporters and sports stakeholders across Liberia, with many revisiting long-standing concerns over the state of football development in the country.
The criticism adds to growing conversations surrounding the legacy of George Weah, whose rise from world football icon to Liberia’s presidency once inspired hopes for a new era in Liberian sports.
