Piah Wants Arrests Over Illegal Garbage Dumping as Flooding Worsens
Monrovia, Liberia: Information Minister Jerolinmek Matthew Piah has called for tougher action against people who dump garbage on streets and in drainage systems, saying those responsible should be arrested and taken to court.
Speaking at the Ministry of Informationโs regular press briefing, Piah criticized the growing habit of indiscriminate waste disposal, especially along the Japanese Freeway in the Red Light area. He said the practice continues to worsen flooding across Monrovia during the rainy season.
The minister noted that people who throw plastic bags, food containers, bottles, and other waste into public spaces are contributing to blocked drains, preventing rainwater from flowing freely. According to him, the clogged drainage systems have led to flooded roads, damage to communities, and increased public health concerns.
Piah called on the Liberia National Police and the Paynesville City Corporation to step up enforcement by identifying offenders, making arrests, and ensuring they face prosecution. He also encouraged citizens to dispose of their waste responsibly, stressing that keeping Liberia clean is a shared responsibility.
He said lasting improvements in sanitation will depend on firm enforcement of existing laws alongside greater public commitment to protecting the environment.
