Ruling Allows Global Methodist Church to Use Ganta Mission Property Amid Ongoing Dispute

Monrovia, Liberia: The Supreme Court of Liberia has denied a petition for a Writ of Prohibition filed by the United Methodist Church (UMC), effectively lifting restrictions previously placed on the activities of the Global Methodist Church (GMC) within the Gompa District of Ganta, Nimba County.

The High Court’s decision affirms the GMC’s right to possess, occupy, and utilize the Ganta Mission property, a key point of contention between the two denominations.

The legal battle stems from claims by the Gompa District of the United Methodist Church, which argued that it holds lawful ownership of several properties in Ganta City currently occupied by the GMC. The UMC maintained that the breakaway denomination had no legal authority over the assets, including facilities associated with the Methodist School and Hospital.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had issued a prohibition order restraining all parties from taking possession of the disputed properties pending further legal proceedings. However, following subsequent judicial review, the Court lifted the restriction.

With the prohibition denied, the Global Methodist Church has now been granted the legal clearance to resume its activities in the Gompa District.

The ruling paves the way for thousands of GMC members to gather in Ganta for the church’s first annual conference, scheduled from Wednesday, February 25, through Sunday, February 28, 2026.

The conference is expected to bring together pastors, church leaders, international guests, and members from across Liberia. Organizers say the gathering will focus on reflecting on the church’s one-year journey, assessing institutional progress, and outlining its future direction.
