Speaker Koon Announces 2026 First Sitting of Legislature at Providence Baptist Church
Monrovia, Liberia: House Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon has announced that the first sitting of the 2026 Legislature will be held at the historic Providence Baptist Church.
Speaking at the National Women Prayer Walk held at the Capitol Building, Speaker Koon disclosed that the opening session of the Legislature, scheduled for the second working Monday in January, will take place at the church where Liberia’s first lawmakers convened before the construction of the Capitol Building.
He described the decision as deliberate and deeply symbolic. “If you want to jump further, you must take a step back,” Speaker Koon said, explaining that returning to the “old mat” represents a moment of reflection, humility, and recommitment to Liberia’s founding principles.
According to him, the move is intended to inspire lawmakers to govern with integrity and purpose, while guiding the nation toward the destiny it truly deserves.
The historic sitting is expected to set the tone for a renewed era of responsible, people-centered leadership as the Legislature begins its 2026 session.
