United States Faces Backlash as Malema Claims “FIFA Has Already Failed” Over Alleged 2026 World Cup Visa and Security Discrimination Controversy
South Africa:Allegations made by Julius Malema, the firebrand leader of South Africa’s Economic Freedom Fighters, have triggered a wave of international controversy after he accused the United States and football authorities of discriminatory treatment linked to visa delays and security screenings ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Malema, known for his radical political stance and outspoken criticism of Western governments, claimed that recent developments involving participating nations expose what he described as “systemic inequality disguised as global security protocols.”
In a strongly worded statement, Malema alleged that Swiss player Breel Embolo experienced visa delays, while Iraqi striker Aymen Hussein was reportedly held for hours upon arrival in the United States for questioning before being allowed to join his national team.
He further claimed that the Iranian national team faced prolonged visa processing challenges in Türkiye, with several members allegedly denied entry into the United States, forcing last-minute disruptions to their tournament preparations.
According to Malema, CAF referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan was also denied entry despite holding a diplomatic passport, a move he described as “a direct attack on the integrity of global football governance.”
He added that members of the Senegal national team staff were subjected to intensive security searches, while the Uzbekistan squad reportedly underwent bomb-sniffing dog inspections, incidents he said “humiliated African and Asian football nations on a global stage.”
Malema also alleged that some Scottish supporters had their ESTA travel permissions revoked shortly before departure, while numerous fans who had already purchased tickets and booked accommodation were left facing financial losses due to rejected visa applications.
In his conclusion, Malema delivered a sharp condemnation of the tournament organizers, stating that “FIFA has already failed in its duty to guarantee fairness, dignity, and equal treatment for all participants,” while warning that the situation could damage the credibility of the World Cup if not addressed.
Neither FIFA nor United States authorities have issued an official response to the allegations at the time of reporting.
