LRA Renews Commitment to Media Partnership on World Press Freedom Day

Monrovia, Liberia: The Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA) has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening collaboration with media institutions in promoting voluntary tax compliance across Liberia.

Remarking as a guest during this year's World Press Freedom Day commemoration organized by the Press Union of Liberia (PUL) in Kakata, Margibi County, Acting LRA Communications Manager Jerry Siakor described the media as a vital partner in strengthening democratic governance and fostering public trust.

Siakor assured journalists that the LRA remains steadfast in its cordial relationship with the media.

He said the institution is open to providing timely information and clarifying tax policies, as part of efforts to strengthen transparency and accountability in revenue collection.

The LRA statement comes as it intensifies efforts to boost domestic revenue through expanded tax education, public engagement, and improved access to information.

“A free, independent, and responsible press remains a cornerstone of democracy and effective governance,” Siakor said.

He emphasized that journalists play a crucial role in simplifying tax policies, countering misinformation, and encouraging citizens to fulfill their tax obligations.

According to him, effective revenue generation depends heavily on public confidence, something he said can only be achieved through strong and sustained collaboration with the media.

The LRA Acting Communication Manager also praised media houses across Liberia, for what he calls amplifying tax awareness messages.

He further stated that maintaining a partnership with the Press is essential to increasing citizen participation in national development.

Meanwhile, Jerry Siakor emphasized the importance of taxation. He noted that revenue supports critical services including infrastructure, education, healthcare, and national security in a state.

At the same time, Siakor called on journalists to uphold professionalism standards. According to him, press freedom must be matched with ethical responsibility to serve the public good, especially in an era of digital influence on traditional media.

“A free press must be guided by truth, fairness, and a commitment to the public interest,” he said.

The event brought together officials of the Press Union of Liberia, media practitioners, government representatives, development partners, and civil society actors among others.

This year's World Press Freedom Day was observed under the global theme: "Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development, and Security".

World Press Freedom Day is celebrated on May 3 each year, to recognize the sacrifices of journalists and media practitioners in society.
