Boakai Calls for Emergency Meeting Amid Growing Tensions at Liberia-Guinea Border

MONROVIA, LIBERIA: Amid tensions at the Sorlumba Port of Entry in Foya District, Lofa County, over alleged incursion by armed Guinean soldiers into Liberian territory, Liberian President Joseph Boakai has called for a high-level emergency meeting with the leadership of the national Legislature this Wednesday, March 10, to review the situation and determine an urgent approach.

According to the Liberian Executive Mansion, the meeting will gather key leaders from both branches of government to assess the security and diplomatic implications of the reported incident.

Authorities state that the government is handling the matter carefully to maintain calm and diplomacy.

Reports from the border region indicate that the tension began early Tuesday when Guinean soldiers crossed the Makona River, which forms part of the natural boundary between Liberia and Guinea, and initially raised their country’s flag at the Sorlumba Port of Entry.

Local sources said the soldiers claimed they entered the area to halt sand-mining operations by a company, BK Enterprise Inc., arguing that the section of the river where the activity was taking place is within Guinean territory.

Fear has since spread among residents in northern Liberia, with many calling for immediate intervention by the Liberian government.

Speaker of the House Richard Nagbe Koon will lead the delegation from the House of Representatives, while Jeremiah Kpan Koung, President of the Senate, will head the Senate leadership team expected to participate in the emergency discussions with President Joseph Boakia.

“The President believes it is important that all branches of government are fully briefed and united in responding to matters affecting Liberia’s territorial integrity,” a government source said. “This meeting is intended to ensure that the Legislature is directly involved in shaping the national response.”

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives has scheduled a separate meeting with the joint security agencies on Thursday, March 12, to further investigate the incident and explore possible diplomatic and security measures.

Government officials reaffirm that Liberia remains committed to a peaceful resolution and will engage through diplomatic channels while ensuring that its sovereignty and territorial boundaries are protected.
