Inside Job or Security Failure? Newborn Stolen From Zwedru Hospital Baby Later Found Alive

Zedrew County, Liberia: A shocking and troubling situation unfolded in Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County, after a newborn infant went missing from the Martha Tubman Memorial Hospital an incident that triggered public outrage before the baby was later found alive.

The Administrator of the hospital, Mr. Thomas Q. Neewary, confirmed that the six-day-old infant disappeared from the Children’s Ward at around 2:45 a.m. on Saturday, November 15, 2025. According to him, he received a call from the Children’s Ward Director informing him of the alarming situation.

Mr. Neewary said he immediately contacted the Liberia National Police to launch an investigation into how a newborn could vanish from a government health facility under the watch of nurses on duty.

Speaking to our reporter, Tracy Nuch, mother of the missing child, said her baby was taken to the CPU shortly after birth due to a critical health condition. She explained that the infant had been responding well to treatment and was nearing discharge.

According to Tracy, nurses later informed her that the baby’s skin color had begun changing, requiring further observation. She continued breastfeeding the child and checked frequently to ensure he was improving. She noted that the baby looked stable and healthy before she went to rest.

However, tragedy struck when she returned to the ward at around 3:00 a.m. only to discover that her baby was gone. Shocked and devastated, she immediately raised an alarm.

Police later announced that the baby had been found alive in the Kula Bypass community. The Women and Children Protection Section of the Liberia National Police revealed that the infant was discovered just hours after the urgent search began.

Investigators say an unidentified woman took the child and had reportedly entered the hospital wearing a hijab before fleeing with the infant. Police continue their search for the suspect and are exploring whether the act was linked to negligence, criminal collusion, or a coordinated plan.

Health Ministry’s Prior Statement

Before the baby’s recovery, the Ministry of Health had issued a nationwide alert describing the incident as a severe security breach. The Ministry urged the public to report any suspicious behavior involving a newborn or unusual movements around the hospital.

Authorities have thanked the community for its cooperation as the investigation continues.
