Senator Dillon Urges the Students Unification Party to Shift Focus from Street Chanting to Budget Analysis
MONROVIA, LIBERIA: Montserrado County Senator Abraham Darius Dillon has issued a strong call to the Students Unification Party (SUP) at the state-owned University of Liberia and other student organizations. He urges them to move beyond traditional politics characterized by slogan-chanting and to take a more active interest in scrutinizing the national budget.
Senator Dillon emphasizes that Liberia needs a new generation of student activists who engage with government processes using knowledge rather than noise.
He acknowledges that student groups have historically played a crucial role in shaping national discourse, but stresses that the current times require a more informed approach to activism.
Senator Dillon emphasized the importance of understanding how billions of dollars, allocated annually to various ministries and agencies, are distributed and whether they genuinely benefit the country.
He encouraged student organizations such as the Students Unification Party (SUP) and PROSA to engage directly with the national budget within their academic environments. Dillon urged these groups to study, discuss, and question the budgetary allocations, rather than solely relying on slogans that fail to address the real issues at hand.
“I am calling on the Students Unification Party, PROSA, and other student groups to thoroughly examine the budget,” he stated. “Let them bring the budget to the palava hut and debate the allocations.”
He emphasized those student leaders who understand national budgetary processes will be better positioned to challenge discrepancies and expose wasteful spending. In his view, activism without informed arguments risks becoming empty noise rather than a force for accountability.
Senator Dillon pointed out that Liberia cannot continue to rely solely on civil society institutions to monitor government spending. He believes students, given their numbers and influence, can make a significant impact by demanding transparency in how public funds are appropriated.
In a recent development, the Senator has highly commended Liberia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Her Excellency Sara Beysolow Nyanti, for her exceptional performance on the international stage.
The Senator praised Minister Nyanti for her astute leadership, highlighting that her contributions are enhancing Liberia’s global standing.
He specifically acknowledged her role in securing a non-permanent seat for Liberia on the United Nations Security Council, describing this diplomatic achievement as a testament to her competence and dedication.
“Madam Sara Beysolow is performing exceptionally well. She and her team have done an incredible job and truly deserve recognition,” Senator Dillon stated.
